Abstract
Since the 1940s, comics and graphic novels are recurrently functionalised as a device to inform their readers about the history of literature or specific subjects of knowledge concerning literary history. Later examples often implicitly refer to the concept of the early “Classics Illustrated” series as a pioneer – sometimes, however, in a parodic and ironical way. There is a wide range of respective formats, and it is continuously broadened and opened up to new arrangements. Sketches of different examples will illustrate this. Already in the “Classics Illustrated” series, the paratexts form an interesting part of the entire arrangement, as they can be read as reflections of the artists’, the scenarists’ and the publishers’ ideas about the pre-conditions and effects of representing facts of literary history via graphic storytelling. In more recent examples, the artists often play with paratextual formats in an ironical and sometimes refined way, thus creating exlicitly self-referential graphic narratives – and at the mean time reflecting about conceptualizations of world literature.
