Abstract
“The study dealing with children’s comics is also of a descriptive  psychological nature, but covers a somewhat broader field. Studies of this sort provide very necessary and valuable information, but their particular character gives us occasion to point out that the very aspects which make such studies valuable should not tempt their readers to overwide generalizations. For example, there has recently been much public discussion as to the merits and demerits of children reading comics. The study in this volume was done several years ago and deals only with certain specific kinds of comics. It does not include some of the types which figure most prominently in the present controversy. Further, and equaly important, it aims at clarifying basic psychological proceses and not at yielding at once statistical findings. This type of work, thus, is an indispensable pre-condition but not a substitute for large-scale statistical surveys.” (Paul N. Lazarsfeld u. Frank N. Stanton: The Introduction. In: Communications Research, 1946–1947, S. xvi)
