Abstract
In Maus, Art Spiegelman uses graphic narrative to question the ethical foundation of representation, and the relation between historical narrative and ideology. The form of Maus implies that no authentic reconstruction of the Shoah is possible, that history is inevitably mediated and appropriated. Besides alerting us to the instability of truth and grand narratives, however, Maus focuses on the aftermath, both public and private, of the Shoah. A self-conscious quest for representation, Spiegelman’s work has changed the way in which we construct the Shoah as a historical object.
