Abstract
This final installment of a three-part series discusses World War III Illustrated's role in forming the vanguard of “independent comics” or the “alternative comics press”; Art Spiegelman and his wife Françoise Mouly's brainchild, RAW magazine; the story behind Spiegelman's Maus; Will Eisner's Fagin the Jew, a retelling of Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist; Joe Kubert's Yossel: April 19, 1943, a fictional portrayal of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising; and Judd Winick's Caper series about the Weissman crime family. Kaplan also points to the emergence of a new generation of explicitly Jewish protagonists, such as Reuben Flagg of Howard Chaykin's American Flagg; Paul Levitz' 30th-century superhero Colossal Boy; Jon Bogdanove and Louise Simonson's Superman as a Golem who defends the Jews of the Warsaw Ghetto; the characters of Neil Gaiman's revitalized Sandman series; and The Thing, aka Benjamin Jacob Grimm, who, two years ago, is revealed to be Jewish.
