Abstract
Out of Sequence: Underrepresented Voices in American Comics is a comics art exhibition that was displayed from October 23, 2008 to January 4, 2009 in the Krannert Art Museum on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. The purpose of this analysis is to identify how comics’ narrative form can inform curatorial design in order to explicate potentials for sequential art in museums. The curatorial design of Out of Sequence exploits the multiple modes of meaning-making inherent to sequential art to communicate the theme of the exhibition, asserting the diversity of American comics. In so doing, the curatorial design provides a useful case study of comics as multimodal pedagogy within a museological context.
